I’m going over to NY Ron Paul headquarters to watch the debate tonight. Should be interesting to say the least.. I’m wondering what kind of people they’ll have there, here in the midst of New York.
I’ll write some kind of report tomorrow on how it was.. By the way, you should all check out the previous post, Jason and I are having a wide ranging debate in the comments. So far I think he’s an authoritarian and he thinks I’m a wide eyed idealist, but we’re having fun.
UPDATE: Had a great time at the HQ for the debate. A lot of energy and support for limited government, and a young crowd which makes me somewhat more optimistic for the future of liberty in this country.
I thought Ron was very strong, he went on the attack against the other candidates finally and came out well, winning the text message instapoll after the debate by a wide margin. My favorite part was when he told the other candidates that he was the most conservative candidate on the stage, and they couldn’t say a word in dissent because they know he’s right.

Most of Ron Paul’s “active” support is from a younger crowd. In the meetup in my area we have a wide range of people from VC’s to homeless people who use the internet at the library to WWII vets. The meetings are the best. I like seeing the pro-gun guy in cowboy boots sitting next to the guy in a skirt (ok I know it is a utility-kilt but it looks like a skirt to me) sitting next to the girl who studied at the Von Misses Institute while we discuss how to grow Ron’s support.
I support Ron Paul because for once I have a chance to use my vote to change my party to better represent my views. This is a great opportunity that I cannot pass up. The GOP party is decaying and contracting very rapidly, evident by the fact over 50,000 more ballots were cast for democrats in a largely independent New Hampshire a few days ago. So, I guess you could say I am using Ron Paul.
By the way, Pax, I know you think Ron Paul’s foreign policy is disastrous, but he is right. We cannot afford it. America is insolvent.
I am so tired of hearing about abortion and immigration. Abortion is a polarizing issue that no two people can agree on. The government should stay out of it. Immigration will not be an issue next year with the economy. We are already experiencing an illegal immigrant exodus from here as labor jobs tied to the housing market vanish. Will anyone want to come to the US when we have no jobs available?

You know, I’m kind of coming around on the whole foreign policy thing.. I don’t think I favor an immediate withdrawal from Iraq, because there are people there who are helping us and have risked their lives and their families lives to do so. I don’t think we can just leave them hanging, and I’d like to see us finish the job and leave with our heads high and the mission accomplished.
As far as the rest of the world and the longer term future though, I’m coming around to the realization that we cannot continue in this fashion, and we do need to get out of all these places and let other countries sink or swim on their own. We should help other countries only by providing an example of what unfettered freedom can accomplish.

That is so funny. Be careful though, you are entering group think territory. Ron’s supporters are so energetic it is easy to be swayed…
I see sort of a cult of personality developing around Ron Paul. I guess it is because he are not used to having a politician who speaks the way he does. It is like coming out of a fog.
