New iPods, cheaper iPhone, wireless iTunes store.. It was a big day for Apple. Now I need to decide whether to wait for my contract with Verizon to be up and get an iPhone, or get the new iPod Touch instead.. For the same price the Touch has 16GB vs. 8GB for the iPhone.. but it’s a phone.. Damn you Apple!
Apple has effectively refreshed its entire iPod lineup, starting with new, cracker-sized Nanos with video capabilities on 2-in. screens (4GB, $149; 8GB, $199), new iPod “Classic” in sizes of 80GB and 160GB ($249, $349, respectively) and the new iPod Touch, which puts iPhone-like multitouch functionality in WiFi-enabled iPods (8GB, $299; 16GB, $399). Plus, early adopters got the shaft on the iPhone, with the 4GB model falling off the face of the earth while the 8GB drops two hundred smackers! Makes ya glad you stood in line for four days, eh?
The wireless iTunes store, however, will end up becoming the most revolutionary of today’s innovations. Not because of the opportunistic Starbucks tie-in, but because it starts a new era of always-on, anywhere content shopping that makes our iPods less of an accessory and more of an entertainment hub. We can now by on impulse, with no computer required.
